Log in cPanel. Click 'Password protect directories' in the security column. For password protection understanding, let us assume that password protection has to be made for 'demo' directory. Select the check box against the text 'Password protects this directory'. Enter name for protected directory. Save the changes. Go back and enter a user by filling up the options. Return to directory list, after confirmation of user. Visualize the up level directory and you can visualize a locked icon of demo folder on the left side of screen.
