You'll get used to it. Later you will realize that Gimp is much easier than Photoshop. I use Photoshop and Gimp. Honostly I think they are sort of both the same. Try it out for a week or two. Look for some tutorials and you will begin to love Gimp.

for easier explanation, right click the text layer and at the very bottom or somewhat you'll see 'Alpha to Selection' a red square-looking icon to the left of it. (:
