Yes.. ECO is a bad thing on the freeway.. Use only ECO if you need to enginebreak. On the freeway its better to drive without the ECO.. All scenarios where you can coast is much better than enginebreaking with ECO..

You were picking up miles cause you were in slow traffic.
I wonder whether costing at freeway speeds is more energy efficient than regenrating (which is what is happening more in eco-mode). Any form of driving above 40mph (be it stady or coasting) is inefficient due to the drag that kicks in logaritmicly. So one could argue that reducing quicker to a lower speed (and regenerating on the fly during the reduction) is good, cause you reach a more efficient speed sooner...

@DuurzaamNu Yes I have later learned also how to improve the speculated freeway range of 60 miles to 80-90 miles by not using ECO mode. I will post a video later this week explaining how to have your vehicle coast and not convert the kinetic energy into electrical energy. There is a power loss in that conversion that causes the driver to constantly have to speed up the vehicle to make up for the loss in speed through the conversion.

@DuurzaamNu Yes coasting is more efficient because you are using that raw energy instead of converting back to electricity and then back to kinetic. By eliminating this conversion you can achieve higher efficiency. Power is lost in the conversion through friction and heat.
