This is Maya, a female South American Jaguar. Born October 18, 1993, in a roadside zoo, she was rescued and now lives at the C.A.R.E. Foundation sanctuary in central Florida.
Maya is one of only a handful of workable Jaguars in the country. She is named after the Mayan people who worshiped the Jaguars as gods.
See The CARE Foundation's website for the story about Maya and the other animals in their care.

  • Unfortunately, Maya passed this year from cancer. She lived 1993-2011, and was the most beautiful cat I have ever seen. We will never forget her.

  • i think its so annoying when people have conversations with the animals. Like they're a house pet, when they want nothing more than to rip you too pieces

  • Her handler's voice is comforting to her, if not to you.

  • From what I was told, a larger enclosure is planned that will allow her lots of running room.

  • @bonelessBob even housepets could give a fk, dogs dont care for high pitched jibbery-style blabbery.

  • Is a jaguar a safer big cat to own compare to a tiger or lion? Just curious

  • I hope it is an enclosure the size of montana!

  • I disagree, the Maya were absolute masters of time and they viewed the jaguar as masters of their domain at night- therefore, in the Maya realm, the jaguar Was God. A spirit that roamed earth killing humans. Centuries ago those animals were a lot larger then than now. extremely ferocious and violent killers.

  • The Mayans did not worship the Jaguar as a "God" per say, they where necessary beings competing with humans at the top of the food chain and help to maintain ecological balance. They where the Creators helpers. Manifestations of the Creator's power and strength. She needs a bigger enclosure. They are use to migrating throughout the "Americas". That is why she is frustrated.
