My Bloody Valentine es la banda más importante dentro del shoegazing[cita requerida], un estilo musical iniciado a fines de los 80's. Influenciados por el post-punk, dream pop, rock alternativo e indie de bandas como Sonic Youth, The Velvet Underground, The Jesus and Mary Chain y Cocteau Twins, quedaron establecidos como una leyenda del rock indie, siendo inspiración e influencia para bandas contemporáneas importantes.

Pese a haber tenido una corta vida (1985-1991), marcaron fuertes tendencias y toda una forma de hacer música que se fundamenta en guitarras distorsionadas y semi-ambientales, con voces femeninas frágiles y melódicas contrapuestas a ambientes extremadamente densos. Por eso, su guitarrista, Kevin Shields, es también una figura de la época, y es padre del modelo que siguen otras bandas similares como Ride, Lush o Slowdive. Por la revista Rolling Stone de los 100 mejores guitarristas de todos los tiempos quedo puesto 95 Kevin Shields de My Bloody Valentine.
