Research engineer John Tompkins shows how his Intel Labs team is exploring alternative energy sources for powering and recharging future laptops, beyond the wall socket. Solar panels or fuel cells can actually be used to recharge batteries and power laptop motherboards. This was demonstrated at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, CA in September 2010.

  • In this case the solar panel connects directly to the laptop relieving the battery of having to provide 100% of the laptops power needs. The laptop’s internal battery and the solar panel are providing what the laptop is consuming at the same time. There are some advantages to using the power directly from the solar panel without having to first charge an external battery. No need for an external battery that the panel needs to charge first, can use smaller solar panels...
