The Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh, PA is a modern engineering and architectural masterpiece. I was designed by Mitchell & Ritchey Architects in 1959 and built in 1961 and is located at 66 Mario Lemieux Pl. The shiny dome is a 415' clear-span that opens to 1/8 coverage making an exterior and interior space at the push of a button! It has been home to the Pittsburgh Penguins Hockey team, many great arena concerts, symphony performances, Duquesne basketball games, and many other public gatherings and conventions for 50 years. A new arena (not nearly as iconic or architecturally significant ) in Pittsburgh will now host these functions.
Rather than demolishing this great building and versatile structure it can be reused with a new function or set of functions to continue to serve Pittsburgh in new ways and hold new meanings. It has a great deal of potential and many possible new purposes and uses for the building, but the first step is to let our local officials know that is important to all of us to keep the Mellon Arena. It is up to all of the Pittsburgh citizens, hockey fans, architects, planners, engineers, and interested individuals to save make the right decision.

Wow I have such great memories of that place! The new one is nice, but it does not resonate PGH like the arena did.
