RiP JANNEL [93-07]

They were coming home from a day at the beach, five teenagers savoring the last week of summer vacation. One was starting college.

Three were starting high school. A fifth was a high school junior. It ended, on Aug. 15, with a horrific accident on Commercial Boulevard near Florida's Turnpike that killed two Nova High School students and seriously injured two other teens.

Funerals will be held today for Michael Angelo DiPasquo, 18, of Lauderhill, who graduated in May from Nova High, and Jannel Jasmine Thompson, 14, of Miramar, who this week would have started the ninth grade at Nova.

Yulaikys Dominguez, 16, of Sunrise, a junior at Piper High, is still hospitalized. Michael's sister, Marifrance DiPasquo, 14, was released Friday from Broward General Medical Center.

'You don't even know how excited [Jannel] was to be starting high school. She had all of her clothes ready,' said her mother, Marisol Ferrandiz, who lost her only child. Friends say she is devastated, and struggling to pay funeral expenses.

Students at Nova middle and high schools have sold T-shirts and car stickers to raise money for the families.

Jannel had attended the Nova public schools since kindergarten. She played basketball at Nova Middle, and was a volunteer this summer at the Boys and Girls Club. She wanted to be a dentist.

Michael was on the swim team and played baseball at Nova High. He planned to attend Broward Community College, join the firefighter academy, earn a degree in criminal justice and join the FBI, his family said. He was working as an assistant manager at Cheeburger Cheeburger at Sawgrass Mills. 'He will be remembered for how he treated everyone,' said Mark Kugler, 18, a lifelong friend who graduated with Michael in May. 'Michael was his own person. He had this charisma ...'

According to police, Michael DiPasquo was driving a blue Dodge Neon west on Commercial Boulevard when it collided with another car, sending the Neon into the path of an eastbound pickup truck. DiPasquo died at the scene. Jannel Thompson died the next day.

Michael had planned to go away to college until he met Dominguez, said his mother, Andree DiPasquo. 'He had finally made a decision [about] what he wanted to do ... I just can't believe this happened to them. They had so much ahead of them,' she said.

Riding with them was Michael's younger sister, Marifrance, and her best friends, Jannel Thompson and Channel Morrison, 14, of Lauderhill, all students at Nova. Channel was not seriously hurt.

At today's service, Michael's teammates and baseball coach will give two of his No. 45 jerseys to his family, one framed and the other signed by his teammates.The school will hold a memorial service for Michael and Jannel on the baseball field in early February, the start of the season, said Nova's baseball coach, Pat McQuaid. The school will also dedicate a plaque to the two teens at the baseball field. Jannel took trips to Australia with her mother, who was born in Chile and grew up in Australia. The koalas and the kangaroos fascinated Jannel, and she learned to surf there.

'That girl was not afraid. She loved life,' Ferrandiz said, adding, 'Please say that I loved my daughter very much.'
