3D Text in real footage using PFHoe for 3D tracking, Blender for 3D Text and After Effects for compositing

Tracking and shadow are not perfect

Basic Workflow:
-Get camera data with PFHoe and export the Blender Python script
-Load the script in Blender, create the Text and position it. You can load the footage as background image (video) in Blender to check if the position is correct. (View: Camera)
-Create a plane in Blender under the Text (set it to "shadow only)
-Render the animation. (I rendered to png with RGBA(Alpha-Channel and premultiplied Alpha.) Maybe there's a better way.
-Composit the two videos in After Effects or any other Compositor. + I added a little noise and blur to the exported 3D Text

  • I have a question!!! so my tracking in PFHoe is grew and when i take it into Blender 2.5 (by way of using 2.49b) when i export and ourt it into after effects it looks off like horribly off but it wasn't in blender.. i have changed the footage FPS to match the originally tracked footage but still its off i can't find anything that will help explain what I'm doing wrong PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!! :(

  • @CoolDudeProducts hmm, sorry, I didn't have such a problem. i assume you exported to png-files, too? try to make sure that the recoded video has the same number of frames as you have png-files. if you say that video and 3d-model match in blender, then there's no problem with the pfhoe export, i think.

  • can you use mocha for the tracking instead?

  • @FireForHighr quite a while since I made this... mocha is not a real 3D tracker I think, so you can't really use it's data for blender (I might be wrong). But it's fast and has a good integration with after effects, so if you don't need 3D objects in your scene (e.g. only flat text on a wall of a house), I would use mocha.

  • Tutorial PLEASE!!

  • @iiBoreDm Sorry, I don't have the time to make a complete tutorial. Please see the video description, that should hopefully point you in the right direction. If you have a question regarding a certain point, I'll try to help.

  • @CoolDudeProducts also make sure when ever you track with any program that the framerate is the same you recorded at when you are tracking and rendering in the 3D application. usually the script does all the resolution and framerat info for you but you may need to double check

  • can you please make a tutorial?

  • Use a sun instead of a point lights for the shadows, it'll look way better

  • Hi, really great job done! Could you do a tutorial on how you did it? I would really appreciate that. Thanks a lot for your support in advance! Greetings from Vienna! Enver
