After nearly 10 inches of new snow on Wednesday November 23, winds increased on Thanksgiving Day and started blowing all that new snow around. Later in the day, the crew was treated to a fantastic sunset, which you will see in time-lapse in this video. The time-lapse turns about 8 minutes of real-time footage into about 30 seconds.

Mount Washington Observatory is a nonprofit, membership-supported research and educational institution with a mission to advance understanding of the natural systems that create Earth's weather and climate. • Looks like a fairly typical day on Mount Washington then? Can I ask why these videos only seem to be published in winter (as I would like to see a summer video showing a little less wind and snow). Can I ask what time sunset is and how it compares to your neighbours in North Conway?

  • @HarryHayfield - Typical? Perhaps in some ways, but definitely not in others. The blowing snow is obviously very typical of Mount Washington, but it is not nearly as frequent that we are in the clear and get to see all that blowing snow. The sunset is not typical by any means. Sunsets like that only come around a couple times a year, if that. Regardless, nothing in this video is typical for folks that don't live on Mount Washington, or for folks that aren't very familiar with the mountain.

  • @HarryHayfield - Admittedly, most of our videos are shot in the winter. However, if you look at our whole collection of 61 videos, you will find several shot during the summer. The most interesting weather occurs in the winter, so that is why most of our videos are shot then.

Sunrise time on the mountain is around a quarter after four right now. For information on when sunrise is at other locations, you can reference the U.S. Naval Observatory Website.
