Archos 5 review - Part 5: Archos 5 vs. the iPhone 3G

Archos 5 is much better then the iPhone. In this video, I am showing the differences in features and talking about them. The Archos 5 has a much bigger and better screen, browses the Internet faster and better and comes with much more storage for a cheaper price. Those are just some of the main differences.

Erm, within about 5 seconds you say it both twice the size and it's about the same size. Which is it? :)

Also, with archos, expect to spend more than the player itself to enable basic advertised functionality like being able to play music from itunes or being able to record video on the device. Every small little plugin costs extra - you will spend a good $80 on the first day enablling basic functionality. But I guess it's expected from a french product.

The Archos 5 screen is twice the size of the iphone screen, while the Archos 5 is about the same form factor at about 30% more surface space.

All Archos plugins and codecs are available in one pack for 30 dollars. At least Archos provides all those codecs in full resolutions and bitrates including DivX, flac, ogg, wmv, mpeg2, and the real full h264 support which the iphone has none of.

Iphone: 115 * 62.1 * 12.3 mm = 87.84cm cubed

archos 5 60gb: 127.5 * 78.3 * 12.9 mm = 128.78 cm cubed

Also weight, iphone is 133 grams and archos 5 60gb is 250 grams

Screen is 3.5" vs 4.8".

That makes the archos almost 50% larger and always twice the weight to get a 37% larger screen (it is not twice the size...).

I was not aware there is a plugin pack now. I own an archos 605 wifi and have no flac, ogg or wmv support on my archos. Poor long term support from archos :(

What matters is the surface area not so much the cubic area, that is, when what you care about is fitting it in your pocket.

4.8" is twice the surface area of a 3.5" screen. Do the maths, since you are that good at cubed math, do a surface calculation.

Fact is the Archos 5 uses surface area much better than the iphone. Basically the Archos 5 is only 1cm higher and a bit more than 1cm wider compared to the iphone.

dude... for that screen differnce, it takes 8 hours to charge by usb which is bullshit. and you have to buy an add on for 30 - 60 bucks depending on where you buy it, which then means you can charge it in 3 hours. archos 5 = double the price of an ipod touch. don't get my wrong, i'm not an apple fan boy like you are an archos fan boy, but seriously? comparing a PMP to a PMP with a phone and camera capabilities? sigh... get your comparison straight and maybe you can argue.

You can charge it in 2 hours using 15 dollars Mini Dock charger unit. The Archos 5 is now 200 dollars for the 250GB version. The iphone costs at the minimum 2000 dollars including the 2 year plan. The Archos is a far superior device (just use any prepaid 10 dollar phone as a phone in the other pocket).

for playing a movie, the archos is nice, because of the screen size.

but its not a phone

its JUST a media player, so its... kinda useless.

personally i dont want a archos in one pocket, a phone in the other, and a camera in another pocket ,and so on.... best to have a bit of all.

say what u want, but nothing has beat the iphone yet. and im sure with iphone 4 being announced in 3 days... it wont be easier to beat it.

ps.(im a blackberry fan, but i cant deny the respect the iphone deserves)

2nd of all iPHONE is everything+a phone and archos= media player....

the iphone is a hardware wise inferior phone to basically anything. but their software is what makes it great, the os is light and simple. the iphone itself sucks. the os and apps made it what it is. for example u can play all ur HD porn on ur archos but can you remote control your home computers from anywehere in the world? (thats just one app) and theres over 2mil apps

Hi thanks. I was after a 5G version at christmas, now that they seem to be on amazon I am not sure if I still want one!! Do any phone companies offer a contract with the 5G? or would I just simply get a 3G SIM CARD and stick it into the Archos? I am very confused about exactly how to get online with the 5G...... thanks!

yo artwel, buy it from b&hphotovideo or buy it from amazon. Amazon has a 160gb version for 279.99. So go check that out. However, if you get it from b&hphotovideo you can get the 60gb and it comes with the free minidock, and i think the 120 and 250gb come with the free dvr station and they are cheap too. so go check em out and have a nice day

Charbax, can you make a video showing how it looks in your pocket or something of that sort? The only thing keeping me from buying this right now is that i dont know if it will fit in my pockets or not. I wear big jeans anyway but i still need to see.
