Because he was not going fast enough. When satellites reenter Earth's atmosphere, they are going many times faster than he was. Also, even though he jumped from the edge of space, the atmosphere was still quite thick at his altitude. This meant that the atmosphere gradually slowed him down. Satellites enter the atmosphere in just seconds, causing lots of drag.

yeah no shit. i got to meet the man about 10 years ago and the only injuries he got was his right glove depressurized and his hand swelled up.
