There needs to be variety in our literature. I name 2 in the genre, and give my opinion on the matter........

well, as for not hearing about black literature, you're the one getting it out there. i live a block away from my local library so i'll check those authors out. thanks a lot.

It will take a strong and sustained effort by many black artists and writers to create a high quality and diverse profile for black fiction to even get the markets and people to start considering black people as more than a marginal, problematic and enigmatic element in Western culture.

The general opinion about black culture is lower and more limited than any other.

Any individual has usually only a few things that really appeal to them in fiction or film. but with white fiction you have hundreds of items on various subjects, so you can usually find what you want.

With black 10 is supposed to be good enough. The market doesn't have a big space for black fiction. It's usually limited to four or five areas they think will sell.

Most blacks don't pick up something just because it's got blacks in it. And most white people don't buy anything that looks black.

There have actually been African-American sci-fi writters for as long as there's been African-Americans, they just don't get much publicity. Andrea Hairston did a lecture at my school resently, and listed at least 6 African-American sci-fi writters dating back to the 1800s. Hairston also has a new book out called "Redwood and Wildfire" just to add to your library of African-American Sci-fi.

"The Lightning Bug" is my first Sci Fy novel, soon to be followed by book 2 in the series, "Bear Heart at the battle of Akebulan". I have enjoyed reading Walter Mosley's "Wave" and Octavia E Butler's "Wild Seed" and Gloria Naylor's "Bailey's Cafe". I believe there are many very good Sci Fy books produced by African American's .

There are many of us out here. The challenge for many African-American science fiction writers is to overcome apathy and disbelief. Many people believe that African-Americans are unable to write phenomenal science fiction stories. As science fiction writers, we have taken the negative and stereotypical African American image perpetrated by the media and thrown it into the garbage. We are working hard to create a positive image of ourselves. We are out here. We are coming out.
