Barter - Text by Sara Teasdale, Music by Michael Eglin
In memory of Sonya M. Bryant
Performed by the Santa Barbara Quire of Voyces, Nathan Jon Kreitzer - Director.
Barter
Life has loveliness to sell,
All beautiful and splendid things,
Blue waves whitened on a cliff,
Soaring fire that sways and sings,
And children's faces looking up
Holding wonder like a cup.
Life has loveliness to sell,
Music like a curve of gold,
Scent of pine trees in the rain,
Eyes that love you, arms that hold,
And for your spirit's still delight,
Holy thoughts that star the night.
Spend all you have for loveliness,
Buy it and never count the cost;
For one white singing hour of peace
Count many a year of strife well lost,
And for a breath of ecstasy
Give all you have been, or could be.
The Santa Barbara Quire of Voyces was founded by Nathan Jon Kreitzer in 1993 to rediscover the sacred a cappella choral music of the Renaissance and the modern age. The Quire has twenty-five professional singers from the Central Coast, annually auditioned, who volunteer their services to present the highest quality performance of this music in historic settings.
The ensemble works with several living composers, such as Eric Whitacre, Michael Eglin, Stephen Paulus, Michael McGlynn, Steven Sametz, Carl Rütti, and Frank Ticheli, and premiers new works regularly.
Michael Eglin (b. 1975 in Niagara Falls, NY) holds degrees in piano and composition from the State University of New York-Fredonia School of Music and from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He has studied with such composers as Donald Bohlen, Joel Feigin, and Bill Kraft, and Early music with Alejandro Planchart. Active as a conductor, organist, singer, and composer, Eglin presently teaches at Santa Barbara City College, serves as Director of Music and Organist at El Montecito Presbyterian Church, and is the former Artistic Director of the mens vocal octet, Adelfos Ensemble. His choral works are published through Santa Barbara Music Publishing and Ethos Music Press. He is currently the Composer in Residence and Assistant Director for the Santa Barbara Quire of Voyces. He resides in Santa Barbara with his wife Sarah and three children.
