On October 6th, Mailman School of Public Health students, alumni and friends gathered for a reception and performance of FELA!, the three-time Tony award-winning Broadway musical.

FELA! tells the true story of the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti who defied a corrupt and oppressive military government and devoted his life and music to the struggle for freedom and human dignity.

Following the performance, FELA! cast members joined a discussion about the show, human rights, and HIV-AIDS, with co-producer Stephen Hendel, Dr. Linda P. Fried, dean of the Mailman School of Public Health, and internationally renowned AIDS expert Dr. Wafaa El-Sadr.

Fela Kuti died of AIDS.
