if you watch and feel their body language closely, and react to prevent them feeling awkward, you can catch it befor its too late. if it does happen, immidiately give them more space, put your hand on their shoulder (just 1 hand) and look in their eyes while saying "heeey... its ok. your fine. dont worry, I wont hurt or embarras you. I didnt mean that" then be more careful next time.
