"It Always Starts To Rain"
Jack Payne & His B.B.C Dance Orchestra.
Vocal Chorus by Jack Payne, Bob Busby,Bob Manning and Charlie Asplin.

Recorded London, Tuesday September 15th 1931.

It always starts to rain?. Indeed. Some things do not change do they. The comic talents of Britain's greatest dance band are on full display here.
Where are todays comic records?. Randolph Sutton, Albert Whelan to name just two artists recorded this song to keep peoples spirits up. No wonder today people reach for the spirit bottle?.

Enjoy, and have a chuckle or two.

  • These songs were referred to as nonsense songs.British composers knew they could not match their US rivals,so wrote this type of song to fill a gap in eccentric british humour

  • How about 'Variety Novelty'?. I have a soft spot for these old cheer up songs, my Grandad would hum them occasionally and they always made me laugh.

  • @davidglow3 Not match their US Rivals? I take it you've heard of Ray Noble.."Love Is The Sweetest Thing", "By The Fireside", "The Very Thought Of You" , Goodnight Sweetheart" for example?

  • What a wonderful tune. Very clever. When was the last time a song made you smile? Thanks.

  • Hi

We are obsessed with the weather in the UK so I am not surprised we have so many songs about the stuff

  • "It always storts to rine" - real London accent.

    Great post.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • From "Laughing at the rain" to "It always starts to rain", doesn't it just show the range of dance bands in general and Jack Payne in particular.

Such a cheerful number and like the very different "Laughing at the rain", it's overriding message is optimism.

Charming song, mind you. I'm off for a few days next week so I hope it does not always start to rain.

  • Jack created quite a storm lol - fun recording.....loved it...........

  • This song is perfect for the NY-NJ area! It has rained at least 18 days now this month. "Rain, rain go away has become my mantra" :))

I agree that this has very good sound quality.

  • I know someone who aludes to this tune everytime it shows the slightest sign of rain!!Very good sound quality from the gramophone.
