  • I don't understand it,Bush sees no problem with using the troops to get the money for his buddies and their no bid contracts! That money would be better spent not giving money to greedy corporations and bush's cronies but giving the men and women that served so bravely in an illegal and uneeded war the chance to get a better education!

  • Bush would be the first President in history to veto benefits for military veterans who have served their country. Support the troops?

  • Guy, it is harder than you think. You will go into debt before August 2009. Unless you live with your parents or work full-time.

  • this new bill will be very good. Too bad for me though, my gi bill is already drained. I could really use the monthly stipend on top of tuition assistance and book fees right now. eghh oh well I'll pay off my 6k loan as soon as a graduate. It could of been more, but I moved out of my parents house last year. Oh an Im 26. This good bill will do good things.

  • speaking as someone who used the GI Bill, you are in for a rude awakening homie, just think about the 4500 who are never going to get to use the GI Bill. Good luck in school, a bit of advice, the students are just kids, there is no way they are going to understand military life. all they know is what they see in the movies...

    Good luck, in school!

  • ...it's called compromise... you gotta give something to get something

  • MCCAIN DID NOT VOTE FOR THE G.I. BILL.

He is a filthy unscrupulous fraud. How LOW can one be to run on a military record and then betray the troops with such abject distain? He then LIES about it, repeatedly, without a hint of remorse. Every military person out there needs to know what a corrupt dispicable pig he is. May you rot in hell you fowl old man.

  • I agree with the previous post, the administration gives away non-competitive contracts to companies the President and Vice-President have ties to whom we pay our taxes to rebuild Iraq, and they refuses to give veterans a GI bill because it's "too expensive". How much more money did we spend when another company could have done what they did for less? Probably more than enough to afford the GI Bill. I guess it's free trade for everything except the defense contractors they own right? GOP= GREED

  • Not to mention this Iraq war funding bill, of which Webb's bill is part of, is bogged down with other bills like amnesty for illegals. I don't know why all these bills have to be combined, why can't they be self-contained. I'm sure there's a reason why, and I would definitely like to know.

  • diers is drastically cheaper than training a new one from scratch. Does the current GI bill need revisions? Definitely. However I don't think it should pay for college AND your life during those 4 years. Having just finished 4 years in the army and planning to go to college this fall, this bill definitely benefits me, however I cannot in good conscience advocate it merely because of that.

  • He is afraid, as are most military brass, that this will be more incentive for first-time enlistees to leave the service, at a time when the military is already having a difficult time maintaining troop strength. You can argue that this incentive will bring in more recruits to balance out the ones that have left, however you have to realize the enormous financial burden that is incurred to train a soldier, from MEPS processing, basic training, AIT, and other schools.
