After he became a Christian, T.S. Eliot revisited the theme he explored in The Waste Land: how men and cultures go to rot. Who better to read the poem than Brando, and what better backdrop than Apocalypse Now. THE HORROR!

  • What is the music playing at 3:50?

  • @PrivateAckbar I don't know. It was part of the video that I grabbed from the extras on the Apocalypse Now Redux DVD - where Brando is recorded reading most of The Hollow Men - with slight modifications. It is very haunting - but to nail it down you will have to begin there. If you find out what it is, please post it on this page. Thanks!

  • I'm puzzled - the poem is "The Hollow Men" but only some lines are in the script of Apocalypse Now, even the Redux. Is there an extended version/out-take, or where does the Brando narration come from? Wouldn't agree on some of the intonation, but hey, it's Brando!

  • @Nyquistic You are right, only a little of this appeared in either version of the movie. The extended reading of the poem appears on the extras of the DVD release of AN Redux. VORTHOS

  • Amazing! Thanks for posting this; it single-handedly increased the intelligence quotient of da Tube by at least a percentage point.

  • I just wish I could have the uninterrupted audio track of marlon brando reading this without anything else. That would be one awesome thing to listen to in the darkness of your room at night.

  • When I eventually spiral into madness, I see myself muttering this in my best Brando impression.

  • The truth is that there is no culture which can die in the first place. That's mere construction; there is nothing at all.

  • @1986alec It's the tail section of a B-52

  • "This is the way the world ends.......not with a bang but a whimper."

    Prescient words indeed.

  • I really enjoyed this. Thanks for doing the work to put it together & thanks for uploading it.

  • @VorthosForum I ask because I love the music that plays throughout the video in the background and a lot of it plays in the beginning of the hollow men video you used later parts of.

  • Itd be amazing if you uploaded the first part of this hollow men video where that huge bomb is in the water

  • WE CAN'T FORGET THE VICTIMS OF WAR , THE SURVIVING SOLDIERS .

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER , I USED TO PARTY WITH MANY AMERICAN CLUBS . SOME MEMBERS WERE EX VIETNAM VETS , I COULD EVENTUALLY TELL BY THE LOOK IN THEIR EYES , IF THEY WERE . WHAT HAS BEEN STRIPPED FROM THEM , MORALS , SECURITY , FAITH . THESE ARE WHAT WE END UP WITH. YOUNG MEN THAT DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO BECOME MEN , BUT THRUST INTO A CARNAL WORLD.
