Guitar World's Technical Editor, Paul Riario, plays Larry DiMarzio's original '59 Gibson Les Paul and compares his 2002 historic Gibson reissue with the new DiMarzio pickups. He likes what he hears.

  • Hi, I'm thinking about changing the neck pickup in my Hagström Super Swede. I usually play with quite a bit of distortion. Do you have any suggestions for a pickup? I've been thinking about Air Zones or Tone Zones, but as I've understood it, they're more of bridge pickups.

  • @Merioc2k3

It isn't possible to offer useful recommendations without knowing what sound you are looking for. If you email tech@dimarzio.com with a description, we can suggest some pickup choices.

  • hey larry i have a question im planning to put a bluesbucker in my AS73 what would be a good pickup what would balance out the sound and give me a clear but fat sound on my bridge pup

  • @jpjdo1212

A 36th Anniversary PAF bridge model (DP223) should be a good choice.

  • Ok I'll be the one to ask you Larry, why there is no truss rod cover on your grail? I also have this DiMarzio on my Trad and they sound A W E S O M E. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GREAT JOB. =)

  • @Punkdebutique Hi, Thanks for your kind comment.

Regarding the truss rod cover, no reason, I just never put it back on after adjusting it at one day.

    All the best,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • @PBANDSNOW Hi, Yes, I am the real Larry DiMarzio and I enjoy staing as real as I can. However, I do like your idea of paradise.

    Regards,

    Larry

  • The 59' hands down killed it! The other guitar wasn't in the ball park from the start. Get a guitar that is acoustically as loud to begin with then do this comparison. My guess is it will be a lot more of a comparison. The reissue wasn't even a 1/3rd as loud as the original.

  • I installed your 36th anni in the bridge of my Les Paul Classic and my Gibson V. The pup sounds great in both guitars! After a little over a year I have grown to be more fond of the 36th anni's tone in my V above the Les Paul. I 'm not sure if the pup behaves radically differently due to the body shape and far less dense weight of the V or if it's just the solid mahogany vs the maple top on the Les Paul. Regardless, I have flipped which guitar I play the most after the intsall. Hmmm...

  • @ARNOLD1982DEAL Couldn't agree more dude. A bad sounding guitar will always sound bad no matter what pickups you put in it. Personally, i love Dimarzio pickups, but the reissue sounds like someone threw a blanket over the amp.

  • Man this is like the mecca of everything electric! Thanks for this holy grail of a guitar and working to let us try and duplicate it through your pickup!

  • @LarryDiMarzio just curious...is it just me or does the orginal 69 sound a bit brighter?

  • its nice to able to do this....sadly it can all be taken away at a whim.......my fingers dont move like they could right now...but one day...

  • I actually like the reissue pickups more than the originals.
