The great Mstislav Rostropovich (1927-2007) performing Henri Dutilleux's Cello Concerto "Tout un monde lointain", which roughly translates to "A complete, remote world". My late tribute to the late Rostropovich, one of the greatest musicians of our time, who was of a different world himself. Spark notes on the piece and Dutilleux's compositional techniques somehow seem inappropriate, so I will save it for another time. Rostropovich commissioned this piece, along with many others, wanting to share new music with the world, something most musicians don't take the time to do, which is just one of the many reasons why he is so important to not just the cello, but to the last century of music itself. I hope I'm not the only one who still gets emotional when they hear Mstislav.

  • I that guy a midget or something!?

That violin is damn near as big as he is.

  • That's a joke, right?

  • Uh, yeah. I didn't think you'd consider it funny (I'm sure you don't).

When I saw your reply in my inbox, I was expecting to be summarily blocked.

    Sorry, I'm stoned.

    It won't happen again.

  • I would have thought it was funny if I didn't run into legitimate ignorance of that magnitude ten times a day on here.

  • Lulz. I don't think they got the joke. Case and point on that "magnitude" thing.

  • best playing ever of this concerto

you simply do not hear the same music with other perfomances

  • That's exactly how I put it to my friend who was asking whether or not it was worth it to buy the other recording. The quality is so superior with Rostropovich it's literally a different piece of music. I feel the same about the Britten Cello Symphony.

  • Thank you for posting this. Anymore of the greatest playing cello? Then do put them up. Indeed he is the only player who renders me to tears as he touches the divine presence in all notes of sound. Bliss

  • The cellist looks alot like Anton Webern :o

  • this is coupled with lutoslawski's cello concerto on a cd i have of rostropovich. little doubt this is that recording. worth getting for sure.

  • Rostropovich is a genius! I have his recordings of the Shostakovich Cello Concerto's and there just aswsomeness!

  • @polymath7 Damn Have some confidence if your jokes. I just lol'ed

  • LOOOOOOOOOL HAHAH

  • damn funny man!

  • Spark notes on the piece and Dutilleux's compositional techniques somehow seem inappropriate, so I will save it for another time.

i know english well but don't understand that sentence at all

  • You have to admire the ability of someone as short as he is though, being able to master such a difficult instrument despite his physical ability. Polymath indeed.
