John Pilger's penetrating 1983 documentary.

Looks at worldwide propaganda surrounding the nuclear arms race, beginning with the dropping of two American atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, through the build-up of nuclear arms by Russia and America and the siting of the U.S. nuclear bases in Britain and Europe, to NATO's recent `limited' nuclear and chemical war exercise in Germany. Documentary concerning the way in which `official truth' is used to condition pe ople against the real facts of nuclear war, and the concept of more "limited" nuclear arms use.

  • I enjoy John Pilger's films because they speak with undeniable truth and charity. He's often accused of conspiracy theories but when you listen closely, you realize that he is simply presenting facts, from the far left of course, but nevertheless facts. I like how he reduces things to absurdities and contradictions. Pilger doesn't "expose" truths, he simply points them out. I never hear talk about aliens or secret societies.

  • I am retired now and I have more time to check things out, like 911 truth and the other, whay they call false Flag pranks that get good men killed for others to make money. You get the Idea. Can you imagine my delite when I came across someone that I have admired for a long time. John Pilger has given me pleasure for so long time. I had forgotten his name so welcome back John.

  • I agre"only" 1 megaton is "only" equal to 1 million tons of TNT, certainly NOT a low-yield weapon. Very misleading indeed. I agree that he is rather dishonest and cynical, although I do think this is a very good documentary, if one tries to see past Pilger's cynical and pacifist lexicon.

  • If Pilger honestly believes that Trident is undeniably a first-strike weapon then he has absolutely no understanding of what Trident actually is. Pilger makes several other errors throughout the film, and makes frequent use of dishonest and loaded language, such as describing a simulation as showing the effects of a bomb yielding "only" 1 megaton. (1 megaton is by comparison with other nuclear weapons, a very large bomb.) If you wish, I can provide a more exhaustive list.

  • The truth as presented by Pilger is hardly "undeniable." He engages in several acts of intellectual dishonesty throughout the film. For example, he claims that trident is an "designed to attack first." The point of an SLBM like trident is that it is mobile and therefore protected from attack. A first strike weapon would have little or no defense against attack (since there is no use defending the empty silo of a missile that has struck first).
