The Better Beer review heads to Cork Ireland for their next review to taste the second most popular Irish Stout in the world - Murphy's Irish Stout from Murphy Brewery Ireland Unlimited.
Transcript: "James: On Tap Murphys Irish Stout.
Hi, Im James Knott and this is your Better Beer Authority. Today we are reviewing our first imported beer Murphys Irish Stout from Murphy Brewery Ireland Unlimited - which is owned by Heineken.
It is an Irish Stout with 4.0% ABV and it is brewed in Cork Ireland.
Murphys is closely related to Guinness the most famous Irish Stout in the world.
There is a nitrogen widget in the bottom of the can that offsets a lack of carbonation in the beer and provides a creamy, thick head when pouring.
Murphys grain bill contains roasted barley, pale malt and chocolate malt.
What is chocolate malt?
The chocolate malt is what gives most stouts their dark color and Murphys gives it credit for adding hints of coffee, caramel and slightly roasted flavors to its beer.
Chocolate Malt is malted barley that has been dried at a high temperature. It does not taste chocolaty. It is named for the deep brown color of the roasted malt.
Scott, who drinks Murphys?
Scott: I think its a wide variety of people that drink Murphys. You mentioned that it had 4.0% ABV and that is on the low end. It really shows in the beer itself. It has a bitter, kind of, chocolaty balanced taste, but the alcohol is almost unpronounced in the beer itself. So, young drinkers could probably drink this if theyre looking for something new and exciting.
James: Ok. Hey Joby, does the mouthfeel match the head? I mean the creaminess that you see in the head?
Joby: Id say no. The mouthfeel is pretty thin once you get it into your mouth. Whereas the head is thick and creamy. Its a sustainable head, you can see in our glasses we still have a bunch of head in the glass. And even down to the final sip the head is still around.
James: What flavors or aromas are we experiencing here?
Adam: I got the lingering malted flavor, again the chocolatey flavor and a little bit of coffee. I consider this since Im lactose intolerant, this is my chocolate milk right here. This is what I enjoy all the time.
James: Scott, does this beer work for you?
Scott: It works for me for one beer. Id probably drink it with some fish and chips in a bar just hanging out with some friends, but I wouldnt go overboard and drink a bunch of them. It has so much bitter coffee taste that it just kind of throws me a little bit. Its okay. I would drink it. I would probably give it a six.
James: You dont see it as an exceptional beer?
Scott: No. I like stouts. I like Guinness, but its just not quite there for me. I dont know. The mouthfeel is a little off. Its a little thinner than Guinness. Its just not anything that excites me for some reason. Maybe its just today.
James: Joseph?
Joby: Well, as scott was saying, hes kind of comparing it to Guinness. Its hard not to compare this beer to Guinness. When you think dark stout, you think Guinness right off the bat. If I had a Guinness in front of me Im not sure if I could tell the difference. So, Id like to do this. Id like to challenge you America. Get a Murphys. Get a Guinness. Drink them both. Blind taste test. See if you can tell the difference. For me James, I rate it an eight.
James: An eight. Great. Adam?
Adam: I love this beer. Im a stout drinker. I like drinking this beer. I think we had one of our cameramen Frase he said that this could be a meal replacement shake for lunch. I agree with him. I would drink this anytime of the day. Id pour this over cereal. Id drink it anytime of the day. I give it a nine.
James: That gives Murphys Irish Stout a (???) on the BBA Scale. Head to you local pub, try it and let us know if this is your favorite stout.
AND Let us know what you think of the show. Whether you love it or hate it we need to hear the truth so we can keep improving. The comment section is waiting below.

@philyB08 I think I'd rather have Stout with my ice cream.

Why would young drinkers want to drink stout? Murphys isn't massed produced and wouldn't be sold in the average bars. It's very rare to see Murphys sold in the U.K, its aimed at a specific market and that market isn't young drinkers.

@Trotters222 I didn't realize that beers were divided into young and old drinkers. Are there other beers that you think are for more experienced drinkers?
