Versa est in luctum, of Alonso Lobo (1555-1617) performed by Doulce Memoire - www.doulcememoire.nl -
in Haarlem, The Netherlands, conducted by Felix van den Hombergh, April 18th, 2009.
Is it the shaping , the balance, the acoustic, the recording? The singing is outstanding.I always like increased volume at the underlining of "in vocem flentium" from the tenors but the sopranos did it here and the tenors were an afterthought. What an acoustic! Alonso Lobo doesn't deserve to be regarded as a one hit wonder but when you write what might be the greatest motet of the Renaissance (IMHO) you've no-one to blame but yourself.
