GHCA built custom computers from bare-bone systems using the Gentoo distribution of the Linux operating system. This video interviews system administrator Michael Surran, exploring the details as to why the school switched to Gentoo and how Gentoo is used to improve productivity and functionality.

Of particular interest is the use of distributed compiled computing (distcc) among the 20 Athlon computers to greatly speed the software building process.

UPDATE - this video is quite old, so we now run Neoware thin clients with LCD Dell Monitors. However, we're still using Gentoo! To learn more, visit http://www.ghca.com/computers

  • GIMP 2.2.8 was released on 2005-06-27 next version GIMP 2.2.9 was released on 2005-10-27.

  • I like this guy! Installing an OS that can be managed at a micro level like Gentoo can not only make sure that the kids are using the lab responsibly, but also not have to worry about break downs.

Then reading about their modern lab on their website, this would be very cost effective and efficient system.

  • Is this a real local news station? If so, I'm impressed that they actually report something that is not mainstream, and not ridiculously trivial.

  • Ubuntu is no where near light as Arch linux.

  • @extraketchup This is why valve should make a steam operating system.

  • Haha, look at the big KDE logo on the wall 2:20 omg haha right on

  • Just imagine if they would have runned Arch Linux <3

  • Man... I wish I was this smart... I've tried using Gentoo Minimal installation and I can't do a thing. I'll try to stick with Ubuntu and Arch Linux *On Laptop*

  • Gentoo is the Devil's work....

  • Gentoo easy to use ? That's relative :P

Nice video, but... wich year is that ?

In my "School" we use Ubuntu 7.04, and the current version is 11.04 :/
