On Valentine's Day I visited the Suntory Whiskey Distillery with my wife, Kansaipj and his friend Kazuma.
It was my first time at a whiskey distillery and it was definitley a cool place. Although I'm not a fan of whiskey,
I enjoyed the tour and the samples at the end were pretty good. Unlike my trip to the sake breweries,
the only thing I bought at the outlet shop was a gift.

The Suntory Yamazaki Distillery was Japan's first whisky distillery and opened in 1923.

  • Oh no!

Water and whiskey should be outlawed; either drink it neat or don't drink it at all!

Seriously though, I am envious. The Suntory distillery is one of the many places I must visit when I finally make it over to Japan. Their Yamazaki 12 year is absolutely phenomenal and I would kill to sample the rest of their product line.

  • KansaiPJ, who is quite a whiskey enthusiast, seems to agree with you. He did say though, if the water is from the same source as was used to make the whiskey, a small amount is ok!

As for me, I know nothing about whiskey. I'm a beer guy, preferably dark beers! I ad a great time there though. AND...the tour is free :)

  • @Broxi1979 A couple drops is fine, but the whiskey in this video looks really diluted... and there was way too much ice in it. Altogether, that's more water than whiskey and that's a crying shame.

  • Cooool! I gotta go here next time I make it to Japan. I went to the Famous Grouse distillery on my trip to Scotland. I filmed it too if you wanna check it out (sadly I wasn't allowed to film inside the distillery).

  • @andyhoov

That's simply untrue. Depending on the whisky, a small amount of water (talking drops, here) can really open up the flavor, and for a cask-strength, can be required if you want to taste anything (again, depending on the cask). The water should be filtered but not cold.

Ice however, is inexcusable, unless you are in a ridiculously hot climate.

  • i dont know if you have this in japan but try and get some John smiths extra smooth bitter, its really good and i think you would like it

  • Slight water in the whiskey releases the aromas and hides others, each to it's own.

  • Oh you lucky bastard! I wish I knew about whisky when I last visited Japan. Got to go back! The Suntory Yamazaki 18 is truly one of the best.

As for whisky and water - that's the way Japanese prefer to drink it. They like it dilute it 2 to 1 to make it more palatable with food and hot weather. It's called "mizuwari".

  • whiskey with water in the only way come to scotalnd we have water taps ont he bar where you sit

  • looks like a nice clean still, bet it's good...
