I interpret it as a guy who was fed up with the boredom and crappiness of the world so he reached higher to artistic, philosophical, spiritual, and sublime ideals which he found and loves, the "stars in front of him' and now he's alienated from the majority of people and ordinary human experience. Probably wrong but that's how I like to think of it.
