More specifically, this arrangement is by Roland M. Carter. He dedicated it to the Hampton Institute (now University) Choirs of which he was the conductor.

Wow, they just took all the gospel out of that song. Not bad (actually an amazing choir for a youth program) but definitely different.

James Weldon Johnson wrote the words and his brother, John Rosamond Johnson, set it to music in about 1900.
