Riding on the coattails of Sir Mixalot, Kid Sensation, and Criminal Nation, Seattle group X-Ekutivz were poised to break onto the hiphop mainstream. After four years in the underground club scene, the rap trio produced their only video for the 1990 single "Color Blind", which roused the interest of MC Hammer's Oaktown camp. Tragically, newfound fame hit the group hard. 'Rhyme Executive' spiraled into substance addiction and suicidal tendencies, and the 'AM Lover' mysteriously disappeared in an Alaskan fishing accident. "Color Blind" is their only legacy to what might have been.
Seattle had a great hip hop scene in 1990, and videos like this really make me happy that we still have footage of some of it. These guys could have gone anywhere and not lost their souls to the industry.
