I believe Linda Blair was not chosen because it turned out Pazuzu's voice was dubbed by Mercedes McCambridge (who went through shit to get that rasp), not Blair. They therefore decided the performance was not entirely hers, which probably cost her the Oscar. Tatum was good in Paper Moon though, I guess it's just less well known than The Exorcist!

Linda Blair did not win because it leaked to the press that she was doubled in the film,and another actresses voice was used (Mercedes McCambridge). Also, too many people felt that slobbering on a bed was not their idea of dramatic acting.

She deserved that Oscar, but not in this category because it was a leading performance.
