And by the way, they're reenacting a famous painting, "The Spirit of '76", originally aka "Yankee Doodle", by Archibald MacNeal Willard, featuring a flautist with a head-bandage, and two drummers, one very young and the other white-haired. Often the role of the man with the head wound varies, and one of the men is portrayed as the flag bearer, as here; but in the painting, the flag flies from a standard in the background.
