The Takeuchi family sit watching TV and eating dinner when an earthquake hits.
As dawn rises, a young, a scared boy stumbles out of the rubble, calling
for his lost parents.

2003
Shiro visits Leader Kei at the Church in Tabori to give
him a letter from the Kajiros informing him it is time to begin to prepare for the ceremony to summon the God. Fearful at the prospect, the young and seemingly in-experienced priest weeps in the arms of Hisako. She calms his fears by telling him she knows the ceremony and has been watching for a very,
very long time.

Days Later
Kyoya arrives in Hanuda and chains his bike to a tree. He then follows the path through to a clearing and sees a girl and a white dog below him. The girl, Miyako, is hitting something with a rock and she flees as soon as
she realises someone is there.

Hours Later
Kyoya is hidden in the trees when a strange ceremony begins at the same clearing where he earlier saw Miyako. He watches as a group of villagers chant an ominous hymn and two figures walk down an aisle. One of the figures is
Miyako and the realisation makes Kyoya stumble. The noise attracts the attention of Jun and Kyoya flees the scene.

As he does so, he experiences a moment of duality, seeing through another's eyes for a split second and it is then he realises he is being followed by a crazed policeman, Ishida Tetsuo. The cop blunders after him and fires a
shot, Kyoya-kun slips down an embankment and finds himself in a construction site. he runs towards the site office and gets the keys to a truck and a copy of the town's newsletter. After evading Ishida, Kyoya unlocks the truck door,starts the engine .As he lets go of the handbrake, the truck is sent hurtling forward and Kyoya hits the cop full on. Wracked with guilt, he goes to see if Ishida is still alive and it is at that moment the earth-quake hits and the
siren sounds. When it subsides, he doesn't see Ishida rise until it is too late. The cop takes aim and fires, the impact sending Kyoya-kun over the side
of the riverbank and into the river
