This video suggests a novel way to control pest ants. Ants form trails to collect foods and move nests. They use 'trail pheromone' as a guidepost, and distinguish their path. Our research group found that a high concentration of synthetic trail pheromone disrupts ant trail-following and foraging, because ants cannot distinguish their path (natural trail pheromone) from the artificial pheromone. In the video clip, we placed a tube containing synthetic trail pheromone near an Argentine ant trail. We hope trail disruption eventually leads to decline of ant population.
