After a concert fundraising for http://www.medair.org David Pitches introduced us to the various unequal temperaments in F Sharp major - one of the most remote musical keys with lots of sharps. It's unplayable in the old Meantone temperament and various modifications were made to retain the character of different keys whilst mollifying the worst excesses of Meantone.

Some composers went into keys like this very deliberately for specific purposes.

Here we hear temperaments in the following order:
Meantone D'Alembert Vallotti Kirnberger Kellner

Concerts are held here at Hammerwood Park by musicians with exuberant enthusiasm for their music - and this is felt by audiences who really appreciate the extra dimension that such enthusiasm brings.

  • Who composed this beautiful piece please?

    Rhodri

  • @MRDRWWILLIAMS It's Krebs - a composer who I had not come across before . . .

  • He sounds like one of the more sociable and fun Organists to be around, I know a lot of them that are the complete Opposite, and its really awkward around them.

  • Yes - it's because he does more than merely play the organ well! As a missionary doctor in the Congo he comes across the real meaning of life every day of his existence coming across death, nihilism and new life in all of his work there. As a result for him, life is more than about whether insignificant details are right or wrong and is to be enjoyed and celebrated in all its colour . . . !
