Happy railroading. Rail-Fan Marcel.
The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad (CB & Q) got delivery in 1934 of the first real diesel-electric streamline train in the USA, the Pioneer Zephyr (the Union Pacifics M10000 yellow / brown streamliner of 1934 often claimed for this had a gasoline-electric drive system). The articulated train (one truck only for two cars) consisted of a Powercar with railroad post-office, Baggage, Coach and an Observation car. The Budd Co built Zephyrs styling was sleek and racy and very innovative for 1934. With its Shovel-Style-Nose, the fluted stainless steel sides, boat-tailed observation end and shrouded trucks, the Zephyr showed a very attractive design to the public. The train was very successful over the years in regular service well into the 60es. Named first The Zephyr, the train was renamed in 1936 to Pioneer Zephyr, after the Burlington had begun to add more such trains to its Zephyr-Fleet.
Thanks
Cheers
