Army scores late in the game only to have the game slip away when Irish defensive back Ivory Covington takes out the Army tight end on a 2 point conversion to seal the win.

  • Oh, and my other favorite follow-up (I remember reading this in SI): a couple of weeks later, ND beat the living hell out of USC. After that game, Holtz was asked how that happened after such a close game with us. Holtz said "Easy. Army's got a better football team."

  • Thats my cousin Ivory covington AKA WOO:)i remeber those dayz.Notre Dame had a squad back then.

  • @timm824 I like stories that start out...."ND beat(ing) the living hell out of USC...."

  • @NyBob85 Actually, going for the win is the right decision. Who the fuck cares about a tie? You want to beat Notre Dame, not tie them.

  • I remember this game.

What a finish, but I wanted Army to win.

  • this is awesome. gotta love a tight one between two classic programs.

  • hell of a hit

  • What a great stop on the 2-points conversion for Notre Dame

  • I was there in the Corps of Cadets and started cheering when Leshinski made the catch. I thought there was no way he wasn't getting in. Great play by Covington, though.

BTW, Army went for the win because they needed a win to still have an opportunity to be bowl eligible. They crushed Boston College 49-7 the following week.

  • "YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME." --Herman Edwards (also Tom Osborne)

  • Hindsight is 20/20, but Sutton should have just kicked the extra point. There's no shame in tying Notre Dame (ties were still counted in 1995).
