Seems to me, he's trying to get the request for forgiveness out of the way now in case he doesn't get a chance next time (gets shot, forgets to after he kills the final boss, etc)

I'd say that asking for forgiveness now that you have a free moment is better than writing a post-it to remind oneself to do it later. Good time management. ; )

As for whether the main character got his own girl killed. It's possible. He might have tried to haggle too much when buying a set of tires. hehehe
