Mother Teresa's Life Celebrated

It's been eleven years since Mother Teresa passed away. And in India's eastern city of Kolkata nuns of the Missionaries of Charity marked the occasion with special prayers. Let's take a look.

STORY:
Hundreds of people from all walks of life and of all faiths joined the nuns of the Charity today. A special morning mass, with prayers and floral tributes were offered at the Mother's grave.

The Nuns thanked God for the selfless service of the 'Saint of Gutters. '

"We are observing today through prayer, through sacrifice, thanking God for the gift of mother's life of holiness, and asking her to bless us and help us also to become holy and... very specially from her for peace, peace in Orissa and peace in all the troubled areas of the world."

Mother Teresa was born in Albanian came to India at the age of 18. She made her home in Kolkata dedicating her life to the service of the poor, aged, and infirm.

She started working in slums and later set up her Missionaries of Charity, which was approved by the Vatican in 1950. This organization now runs over 500 charity homes in over 100 countries.

Mother Teresa received several national and international awards for her social service, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

Mother Teresa's public image is very different from reality. Most of the donated money was spent for pushing religious beliefs, building convents and so on, not for humanitarian purposes. The hospice in Calcutta was as primitive when she died as it always had been. Western doctors and volunteers visiting were disgusted by it – people were dying of diseases that could have been easily treated but the money was spent elsewhere.
