Well, live-ISH. And the boys' music was sexed up by the studio's arranger - but that's Glenn and his men there! (Except the pianist, of course).

  • And yes I hope you have your computer hooked up to your sound system because that's the best way to enjoy much of what YouTube has to offer. There's some amazing sounding things to discover on YouTube!

  • @tfiddler Absolutely - the bass on this is GREAT - WAY better than the records. Also, these days, YouTube has hi-def - some of the stuff there is TV quality. Low-res 240p mono vids are becoming a thing of the past. Mine are 480p and stereo where applicable - I even have some 1080p photosets on another channel.

  • The trumpet soloist is Billy May, famous for his slurping sax sounds on Capitol records and one of the sax players is Tex Beneke, this much better than the official recording on RCA (HMV in the UK)

  • @Scotty14all This is an issue that's come up elsewhere - you get mint original 78s of Glenn and they sound like they were strained through a soggy sock!

Apparently the reason was Glenn's choice of RCA's studios. It has been said he'd have got better results at Decca.

Thankfully, "Sun Valley Serenade" and "Orchestra Wives" had much better sound - and have been PRESERVED - giving us a much better idea of what a great band they were.

Also, the movie tracks were better arranged.

  • Ah, the quintessential Big Band arrangement :D I love it!

  • @tapdance86 - This is probably the best version ever done (better than Glenn's record). If you have audio connected to your computer - it has a great BASS part!

  • Phenominal!

  • @tfiddler Well, I don't have my computer connected to my stereo, but I do have it connected to professional near field studio monitors and the audio quality on this is way better than the original 1939 RCA recording!

  • I'd rather listen to this than any contemporary singer. This is talent, not overdone, over dressed, untalented, wannabe singers who curse in song, can't rhyme, can't play and think they're really something, when they're really just slinging out trash to children and retards who'll buy it.

  • How about we bring back the music, style and class of the 1930s and 40s, but keep all the social and scientific progress we've made since then?

  • Look at the face of the trumpet player near John Payne's head: his grin tells everything about how he likes the trumpet solo being performed by (I read here) Billy May (whom I knew only for his arrangements for Sinatra).

  • I have a relative that played in the GM band. I never met him as he died before I was born but I seen pics of him, at my grandma's house, playing in the band, Glenn Miller directing.

  • this was before my time but this is music ot the crap of today

  • There are 3 too many Alto Saxes. Also I like when the first Tenor played his solo it was obvious hes playing with a metal mouthpiece but he was shown to be using a rubber one.
