well i have the sauber c9 history book and they explained the c291's engine. its 2 straight 6's horizontally opposed but on 2 separate crank shafts so the are individually attached to the transmission and thats why they were having reliability issues. It would me it a flat 12 if it was on the same crank but its separate cranks. The bell housing must have been huge!!

That C291 was one sweet looking car. I do prefer the engine noise of the C9/C11's though.

No, that's just a 180 degree V12. A flat engine has split crankpins, whereas a V engine has shared ones. Ferrari just flattened their V12.

I think that a "flat engine" form and the "180 degree V12" form are different.
