A Dynamo is an electric power plant. The diesel engines turn the copper coil which spins past magnets which makes the copper put out electricity out one direction of the two ends of the copper wire. The electricity is harnessed and used to turn electric motors at a much much higher efficiency than straight diesel could push. Huge machines also hold the responsibility of controlling the power they have. BNSF is also responsible for the earth and rock under the tracks.
