After many sessions of CBT I have come to learn that "I am a Person too!" and "I have as much right as anyone else" are 2 of the best things to remember, I'm a big beardy guy, so i'm sure that people are more afraid of me than i could possibly be of them, but this thought is pushed to the back of your mind when pumped full of adrenaline, so panic attacks are frequent, but I have found that avoiding the situation that you are worried about is the worst thing to do.
woolly mammal 2. so in the modern world we see a bus full of strangers and you think aaaa danger (usually like you say because you put past experiences on it) - your body gets full of adrenalin (for fighting or running) and cos you don't fight or run you get nervous cos you so pumped up. but if you think, aaa this is piece of cake, no adrenalin, no nerves, just normal. course you might have practice but our brains really ain't that smart - well mine isn't - they believe u. love you Donna xxxx
Woo hoo so glad you making videos. This is spot on, and I love the bus trick. It's true about acting confident because when you are nervous your body goes into fight or flight mode which is how we deal with threats. But your mind doesn't know if there really is a threat or not. So orginally say for example we saw a woolly mammal and we either fight and have barbq or run like crazy. but if we saw a giant hedge we thought was a woolly mammal, same reaction
Thank you for this video Donna. I struggle with confidence quite a lot! It feels for me more to do with what my mind is thinking rather than the actual situation itself! But lovely to hear you speaking on this subject. Thanx again :) x
When I think of the lovely transwomen I have had the pleasure of knowing, it breaks my heart when they are afraid of others opinions, or "passing", or going into public dressed in their favorite outfit for the first time. Once, a young lady was scared about going out after our meeting to eat as a group. So I stopped her right there in the parking lot, turned her around and said, "Me and [another transman] are here, we have your back. If someone says something, let us know." That calmed her down.
To steal a quote from a certain supermarket - Every little helps. I'm a bit of a veteran at going out dressed but don't give it a thought what other people think any more, but there still a lot of us girls out there who lack confidence, have posted a link to my FB page as well.
