You know the red metal plate that is flashing and bounces back and forth between the sides is actually a good thing. You went out of your way to avoid it both times so just thought to let you know. :)
It makes you invulnerable for a while if you touch it.

The level 5 upgrade split the left and right off of the ship, and they just floated there (no spinning). Then the ship would shoot two spread shots - above and below.
4 is better in my opinion.
