trusty 'chute. Curious that the pilot
separated from glider (I've learned to
try to get the glider between you and ground so it absorbs some of impact).
Also noted the pilotless glider recovered
itself after almost-vertical dives despite
its broken-wing condition; evidently
the luff lines and reflex bridles were
still mostly intact and functioning.

I don't think he intentionally cut away from the glider. It appears to me as the the keel has broken and ripped away from the glider. You can see what looks like the keel just before he lands. Modern gliders (certainly my T2, takes the hang loop over the X Tube Tension wires for such an event as this).
It would be interesting to know what glider this is and of course the fact about what actually happned as these are assumptions on my part from replays of the Vid.
