This video is being shared to honor two great musicians that are no longer with us.

In the early part of 2003, singer Johnny Paycheck was very sick, and struggling to pay bills, so Owen Bly, manager of the band Red Meat decided to organize a little fundraiser in San Francisco as a way of honoring this great musician. A lot of musicians agreed to be part of this event. Right as the fundraiser was coming together, Johnny Paycheck died, so the event was transformed into a tribute to honor his legacy. On the day of the show at the Elbo Room, March 19, 2003, by some coincidence, the invasion of Iraq began, and the streets of San Francisco were filled with people protesting the war.

Chris Gaffney, one of the performers, just passed away from on April 17, 2008. This video is being posted to honor his legacy.

This is a performance of Chris doing the Paycheck song "Pardon Me, I've Got Someone to Kill," backed by Red Meat and Dave Alvin.

As I explained in another clip from this big show, I planned on filming this show with three cameras, but a freak accident destroyed one of the cameras. As this video wasn't quite up to the standards I preferred, I shelved it for a later date. With the passing of Chris Gaffney, I decided to edit some of these performances, and share it with the world via YouTube.

Chris Gaffney shared lead singing responsibilities with Dave Gonzales with a band known as the Hacienda Brothers. He also performed regularly with Dave Alvin as part of the Guilty Men. If you've never checked out his music, it's worth the search.

  • Thanks for posting. A friend is someone who reaches for your hand and touches your heart.

  • Thank you, taocowboy for the coolest comment I've ever received on YouTube!

  • Thanks to all the friends and family for sharing this video with others, providing the nice comments and all. Funny how I'm paying tribute to a dead man with a song "Pardon Me I've Got Someone to Kill"... I hope Chris is laughing at this one...

There's more footage of Chris to come, as well as performances from other bands that night. Bear with me...

  • wow.

  • Not sure. Does it get any better than this... or worse than this? At any rate, to be added to my "Beards" Playlist! Yeah Mon!

  • Thank you for posting this and to all who post "The Gaff". Chris was that link to stone country music that my uncle played for me at the dusty Army bases in Texas and Oklahoma. I loved Chris from the first time I heard him at the "Blue Cafe" in Long Beach (yes, I am a late joiner). He, his humor and the awsome "Cold Hard Facts" brought me so much happiness!

  • Thanks for posting this video. I belatedly heard about Chris yesterday and now there's an empty hole where my heart used to be. R.I.P. Chris, and condolences to all who loved him and his music. I will always cherish the nights I spent at the Canyon Inn in Yorba Linda drinking and listening to the Cold Hard Facts. After seeing them do hundreds of sets I always looked forward to seeing them again. It's been a blue blue day and the hurt will be slow to leave, so in quiet desperation I'll carry on.
