The assembly in 3D animation of BMW twin turbo V8 engine, notice the unconventional placement of the turbos inside the V, and the intake on the outside!

  • A compact exhaust design minimizes the volume between the pistons when they push out the exhaust to the turbochargers, With being a smaller arrangement it optimizes the transient response,

Moving the turbos from outside the cylinder banks to the center of the engine shrinks the powerplant’s footprint and creates more room in the engine compartment, which usually with a large engine causes a headache with other compentnts like steering column,

  • The main advantages being higher performance especially torque and lower fuel consumption, the path for the exhaust gas from cylinders to turbochargers is shorter helping imporve all round performance and efficiency, It also eliminates the issue of installing bulky heat shielding on both sides of the engine to protect other components from the high temperatures the turbos generate,

Watch as other manufacturers follow with this design especially as emissions become even more stringent

  • Does anyone know why BMW fitted the turbos in that location instead of the traditional location??

  • @josh182389 There are a few benefits to having both turbos and catalytic converters situated in the “V” section of the block, rather than the outboard sides of the cylinder banks:

    Better performance

    Improved cold-start emissions

Improved transient response (the elimination of turbo lag)

    Better packaging

    Compact exhaust

    Heat dissipation from turbos

Look above/below for a more in depth explanation

  • @UberMpower Thank you so much for your most complete and thorough explanation about this new way of mounting the turbos, I really appreciate that you shared your knowledge with me and other people who might have the same question. This was exactly what I wanted as an answer to what I asked: Technical content which is clear enough for car amateurs as myself. Have a nice day man!!

  • @josh182389 It was my pleasure Josh,

Its actually quite interesting why they mounted the turbos there, you would think after all the years of the combustion engine with forced induction there wasn't anything left to redesign, i'm obviously a fan but BMW have always been leaders in moving the tech forward....!

    Have a good one mate : D
