Actually Mia was Macha But Morganna killed her when she helped Tsukasa escape with Aura. The data became Mia and befriended Elk because he looked and was emo like Tsukasa. And then Morganna killed Mia to awaken Macha the phase whom Kite killed and then Mia went back to normal at the end. Only to be brutally killed by C.C corp and used her corpse to create the avatar Macha in an attempt to clone Aura.

All that is left of Mia/Macha is the Avatar

They may be sentinent in a manner considering how Skeith yells FOUND YOU! when Haseo goes avatar and Kuhn does say avatar goes berserk for some reason or another

Well, the thing is, Mia was technically her own person, and not just a construct for Macha to use as a medium. In fact, she never even knew she was harboring Macha in the first place. She was just best friends with Elk.

Actually I believe it makes sense

She is the temptress, she tempts others to love her

She studies as Mia, Elk's and Endrance's (same person's) affections for her, in a way, she's mostly just studying the love he has for her, and is unable to reciprocate, which is why its unrequieted.

Its a bit heart breaking.

Well, Macha wasn't really downgraded. Just changed to fit the different combat style in those games. It's meant to be more of an emotional battle anyway, given who Endrence is.

I find it ironic that the one titled "The Temptress" was meant to research unrequited love.

Macha is one of my favorite bosses because of the charms and skills she used. It's so sad they downgraded that in GU but she'll always be my favorite regardless. Her attacks and skills are what made her a formidable boss in the game. :)
