The magic trick only works around 95% of the time. This is because if the person multiplying the numbers never uses a 9(or 2 3's or 2 6's or a 3 and a 6) then it won't be a multiple of 9. Or as orcyngiser was saying, if the digits given add up to a multiple of 9, then you won't be sure which one it is.

I found this easier to just keep adding the numbers till I got a single digit and then determined what plus my number got me 9 and that was the answer.
