This is memory of Emily Rose (Anneliese Michel) was a German Catholic woman who was said to be possessed by demons and subsequently underwent an exorcism. Michel experienced what is recognized by medical professionals as severe psychiatric disturbances from the age of 16 to her death, at age 23, as a direct or indirect result of an exorcism ritual. Both priests who performed the exorcism and Michel's parents were convicted of negligent homicide. The Roman Catholic Church, which had authorized the exorcism, reversed its position and declared Anneliese Michel a case of mental illness.She refused to eat because the demons would not allow it. Anneliese slept on the stone floor, ate spiders, flies, and coal, and even began drinking her own urine. She could be heard screaming throughout the house for hours while breaking crucifixes, destroying paintings of Jesus, and pulling apart rosaries. Anneliese began to hurt herself, and would tear off her clothes and urinate on the floor.It was determined that Anneliese must be saved from the possession by several demons, including Judas Iscariot; a betrayer of Jesus, Nero; a Romanian god who executed innocents, Cain; an immortal god who is said to one day rule the world and enslave the human race, and Fleischmann, a disgraced Frankish Priest from the 16th century, and Lucifer; the devil himself. From September 1975 until July 1976, one or two exorcism sessions were held each week. Anneliese's attacks were sometimes so strong that she would have to be held down by 3 men, or even chained up.Her knees ruptured due to the 600 genuflections; when you bend one knee to the ground in worship of god, which she performed obsessively during the daily exorcism. The last day of the Exorcism Rite was on June 30th, 1976, and Anneliese was suffering at this point from Pneumonia. She was also totally emaciated, and running a high fever. Exhausted and unable to physically perform the genuflections herself, her parents stood in and helped carry her through the motions. "Beg for Absolution" is the last statement Anneliese made to the exorcists.According the forensic evidence, "Anneliese starved to death". Specialists claimed that if the accused would have begun with forced feeding one week before her death, Anneliese's life would have been saved.
@Orthodoxcrusader Agreeing to let the demons in led to such ghastly violence against her that the parents sent for the exorcists to see what they could do. You can see how bruised her face was in photos of that time. Actually far from being useless, the exorcists managed to cow her demons enough for the violence to stop and her to be able to attend university again, pass all her exams and write a good thesis. They even threw out the demons but they came back saying God wdn't allow them to leave.

@Orthodoxcrusader The parents particularly the father had been previously sceptical she was under siege by demons, her dad saying 'she's just an epileptic'. But after the miracle & acceptance, the parents were putty in their daughter's hands, as once she'd had her second vision of the Virgin and agreed to let the demons in, they just had to trust heaven. The Virgin did not promise her safe survival but heaven if she remained true & that her possession would save thousands of souls in the end.

@Orthodoxcrusader But finally in summer 1975 her vision of the Virgin Mary led to the complete disappearance of her mobility problems immediately. She could run, jump, dance again, whereas before she had to lean on her boyfriend's arm to walk at all. But in return the Virgin asked her to accept this possession to prove to people Satan existed. She did so & the whole thing was totally convincing for her parents who saw her miracle cure & even tried to dissuade her from accepting the possession.

@Orthodoxcrusader Whether it was a case of mental illness is something you have failed to prove. You ignore my post the doctors did not think so, as u also ignore my argument she had many doctors, in fact the medical faculty of her university. The exorcism only began when she was chucked out of bed onto her head by invisible forces and thrown into furniture till black and blue. Doctors failed to prevent that. Priests brought it under control. Drs cdn't cure her mobility problems from age 19-23.

@Porphyrygrampus
"causing death by neglecting"
Well... There you go. It's called manslaughter.
Like treating a cancer patient with prayer in a stage medicine can help, all until his/her death...
It's a case of mental illness; Actually a multiple case of mental illness (The girl wasn't the only ill party here, clearly).
