Shame this Beautiful Airline (worlds best ever)died. More should have been done to save it. Air NZ Fucked things up. Qantas / Jetstar and Virgin Blue are crap compared to Ansett and Jeff Dixon is no better than a Politition, he cares more about Profits than passenger well being, even wanting to source out our servicing to China (how bad would that be) Australia has a Bad record for loosing good things, notably great buisness. I wonder if we Australians will ever learn from our stupid mistakes.

@spdrca I was an Ansett staff member when Air NZ bought the second half of Ansett, we knew that they didn't have the money to buy new planes which is what Ansett needed. NZ should have let SQ buy that half and history would have been different. I took the opportunity for redundancy before the bankruptcy as I couldn't see anything good of Air NZ buying it. What were they thinking????? It was their fault, and we Australians let it happen.

And just eleven years after freeing themselves of the shackles of deregulation, Ansett went under. They should have done what all good 'free market' loving Australian businesses do when they're in trouble: ask for a handout from evil, socialist Big Government!

I still think the best piece of music that really grasped the 'spirit of Ansett Australia' was 'Storms of Africa' by Enya. They used this piece of music for four years from 1996 to encompass the new 'corporate & global' image Ansett was moving into. They used 'Storms' until the nasty/ half-assed 'Absolutley' campaign in 2000/01. This site doesn't have any of the ad's from this time except one.

1st deregulation, then globalisation and privitasation , not only in the air industry but telecommunications , oil, gas, steel, ore. What did we get in return? an almost total loss of manufacturing in australia, a scarcity of secure jobs, and being over taxed left right and centre, not to mention that everything is made in cheap overseas labour markets.
when will Australia wake up? it may be already too late... we've f*&^Ked ourselves up. a total discrace.

I dont think it was necessarily the beginning of the end for Ansett here - the 90s presented some fantastic opportunities for AN, but the lack of re-capitalisation of the fleet, (of the business) and the purging of experience throughout that decade before the sell-off by News Ltd and TNT to Air NZ were all combined factors. I still pass the hangar this ad was filmed in every day and I still really miss Ansett. Was a terrific airline, despite it's problems.

You're probably right - how many competitors had come and gone since deregulation (Compass, Impulse, to name a few)...Ansett fought them all off all admirably, not to mention the loss of its major competitor...
...and which hangar would that be? (K-S? Tullamarine?, etc...)
